Hector Isas, Doctoral Trainee

I am, Hector Isas, and I am a Mexican-American, third-year doctoral student, who is completing his PsyD in Clinical Psychology at California Northstate University, College of Psychology.

I have worked in the field of Mental Health and Substance Abuse since 2014, working in various capacities, such as in Bound to Change Counseling and Consulting, where I worked closely with the C.E.O. and Founder. Upon receiving a bachelor’s degree in psychology at CSU Stanislaus, I gained experience providing mental health education, outreach, and connection to community resources, to primarily Latinx/Hispanix families. After achieving a master’s degree in psychology from California Coast University, I then began working as a Drug Treatment Court Mental Health Worker for the Substance Use Division within Merced County Behavioral Health & Recovery Services. I was also fortunate to have gained experience working as a Clinical Intern at the Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC) in Sacramento, California, where I found great passion in providing therapy to formerly incarcerated individuals, developing and facilitating a men’s group, and partnering with the Workforce and Policy/Advocacy departments.

My passion lies in working with marginalized communities who struggle with mental health conditions, substance use disorders, empowering BIPOC healing, advocacy, and creating long- lasting change. My close relatives who struggle with mental health conditions and substance use have been a motivating catalyst in my desire to work with trauma, substance use, and co- occurring disorders. My core belief is that trauma, substance abuse, and systemic barriers greatly affects all populations and drives him to continue to foster healing, wellness, and change.

Fun facts about me is that I exponentially enjoy reading, movies, art, exercising, and spending time with my family.
