Couples Therapy
What is couples therapy? And how does it help couples?
First off, couples therapy is different from marriage counseling. Couples therapy is for those that could be married, engaged, or dating. Marriage therapy is just as the name suggests and is meant for married couples who seek to do what is best for their marital bond. In this post we’ll be exploring more about couples therapy and to preface it: couples therapy is not going to magically change your dynamic to be an absolute perfect relationship because that’s just unrealistic and that's okay.
What are some signs that it's time to talk about coming in for couples therapy?
- Poor/Abusive Communication Habits
- Infidelity and Addictions (Social Media, Porn, Alcohol, Etc.)
- Attachment Insecurities (Emotional Distance, Extreme Dependence)
- Falling out of love
- Differences in housekeeping styles, parenting styles (unfairness/ invisibility in tasks)
- Difficult upbringing, In-laws, friends, health, work, finances. (Life stressors)
Seeking couples therapy is an important agreement and it’s entirely possible for one or both partners to show feelings like nervousness, fear, resentment, or just whatever tough and nameless emotional block. It’s all normal. The first step is to allow yourself to carry that emotion into the first session and just allow yourself to be there and familiarize yourself with the process even if you choose to not continue.
Remember: couples therapy is for the sake of the relationship, it’s not meant to put yourself or your partner under a spotlight. The bond you share is its own entity that deserves special care and attention.
